    Named in tribute to one of the esteemed plastic surgeons of our time, the second annual ASPS Stephen Mathes Reconstructive Symposium promises to be one of the most comprehensive programs for plastic surgeons regardless of their area of sub-specialization. Planned in cooperation with a variety of leading reconstructive societies, this didactic program will include internationally recognized faculty presenting issues and approaches to reconstructive procedures found in the emergency room and in daily practice.

    The 1 1/2 days of lectures will set the stage for hands-on flap dissections which will immediately follow during the Techniques in Flap Dissection with Cadaver Workshop. The workshop will focus on the fundamental and advanced aspects of flap surgery with an emphasis on all major traditional flaps as well as free and pedicle perforator flaps. Areas covered will include: head and neck, trunk, breast, abdomen, and the upper and lower extremity.

    This course is open to plastic surgeons, orthopedic surgeons, general surgery, and trauma surgeons as well as fellows and residents interested in the basic principles of flap anatomy, flap harvesting and applications. This course will focus on the fundamental and advanced aspects of flap surgery with an emphasis on all major traditional flaps as well as free and pedicle perforator flaps. Areas covered will include: head and neck, trunk, breast, abdomen, and the upper and lower extremities. Pearls and pitfalls for all flaps dissected, as well as exposure of common recipient vessels will be demonstrated. A DVD and course syllabus describing all flaps covered will be mailed to the participants prior to the course in order to allow for adequate preparation. All participants will have a pre-assigned cadaver station for both days of the course and will be assigned two permanent faculty members.

    The SBCH Multiple Trauma Symposium is designed for physicians, nurses, pre-hospital personnel, and other health care providers. The educational subjects will help these individuals to better understand the treatment and management of seriously injured patients.

        * Identify unique trauma care considerations for patients with special needs, including pregnancy, substance abuse, and rehabilitation.

    Updates on Wound-care Practice, a comprehensive summary of most wound-care interventions and barriers to wound healing, is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, July 27, at Pzazz Convention and Event Center, 3001 Winegard Dr., Burlington. The program is for nurses, physical and occupational therapists, and PT and OT assistants. Continuing-education credit is offered.

    The program is sponsored by Great River Wound and Hyperbaric Clinic. The speaker will be Pamela Scarborough, PT, M.S., CDE, CWS, FACCWS, a nationally known teacher and lecturer.

Latest assessments, treatments guidelines for: leg ulcers (arterial and venous, mixed aetiology,understanding pathophysiology,intermittent compression therapy). Diabetic wounds (differential diagnosis, prevention, education, bacterial and fungal infection control and new antimicrobial dressings). Pressure ulcers (classification and management, pressure redistribution, care of skin, prevention and treatment of heel ulcers) Practical management of acute, fungating and chronic wounds. Utilisation of computers and telemedicine in wound care. Pain management, pharmacological and mechanical techniques including dressings. Topical negative pressure for different wound types based on clinical evidence and experience.Wound bed preparation with special focus on surgical and biosurgical. Treatment and management of lymphoedema;nutritional aspects of wound healing. Management of spinal cord injury patients. Utilisation of hyperbaric oxygen for wounds. Wound care in developing countries. Hands-on interactive clinical workshops.

    The 69th AAST Annual Meeting will be held in the historic city of Boston, Massachusetts- the home of TEI Biosciences -  on September 22-25, 2010 at the Boston Marriott Copley Place hotel. Boston's renowned medical and educational institutions have helped to make it an international center of learning and intellectualism.

    The AAST Annual Meeting is a half day longer and will include panel experts and master surgeon lectures throughout the entire meeting.  The 3.5-day program will feature general and concurrent sessions, paper and poster sessions, industry exhibits, networking opportunities and a social program for guests.
